It took about 40 years for the ancient Israelis to reach the holy land and earn their limping recognition, yet Josh Homme had managed to do the same thing, without limping and with 10 volumes of his Desert Sessions project. In his case,10 volumes equals about 6 years, which makes him a fast runner indeed. After his demise with the legendary desert rock kings Kyuss in 1997, and prior to rocking his current band, Queens of the Stone Age, Homme decided to get up-close and personal with some come-and-go friends in order to create the sessions. Partly rock, partly psychedelic, and mostly highly entertaining and groovy, the Desert Sessions are a good slice of fun-in-the-sun music. Some of the tracks even found their way to official QOTSA releases later on, and feature Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, QOTSA), P.J Harvey, Brant Bjork (ex. Kyuss) and Twiggy Ramirez (Marlyn Manson) to name a few. Spreaded over a handful of CDs, the sessions actually prove what desert and friends are really for : rocking out. Get ready for the all new and limited editions of the Sessions vol. 1 through 6, coming out this April !

Bullets on high Octane

Bullets and Octane are a living proof for creating something quite good from a bunch of turn-offs. To be more specific, Bullets and Octane sound like the Danzig-less Misfits, Buckcherry and Velvet Revolver might have sound if they weren't so bragging, full of themselves and pretty much bad in general. True, three wrongs DO make a right in that case. Their new and second album, "In the Mouth of the Young" will be out on April, and according to the song downloads they are offering, it's even a harsher hell of a rock meets punk blast from the not-so-far past, when popular modern rock music was somewhat sensual and powerful, and not just a pale and much boring "post" thing.

A nice, warm cup of Seattle coffee is usually enough to get me through a troubled day. My latest cup is called "Under a Billion Suns" and it's Mudhoney's latest release with Sub Pop. It seems nothing had really changed in the Mudhoney kingdom, from back in the days when they were garage-rock knights till modern age when they are... Well, garage rock knights, but with a more variegated resume under their name. They still kick it, and "Blindspots" has even a Ska (!) feel to it. In days were old Seattle veterans are coming back to life (...If you can actually call Pearl Jam a LIVING band) - Mudhoney are still in the "fresh" category, forever young and always rocking.

Marc Morrissette had visited a lot of places around the world before returning to his Canadian homeland and recording "These Trails are Old and New". The songs on this '05 album represent brief and personal impressions from various abroad sights and experiences, being delivered with a contemporary Neil Young style. Morrissette seems to be a very fresh modern folk rock storyteller, and with a much interesting and varied album like that, there's definitely a lot to expect for from his Octoberman project in the future.

Saint Vitus - Mystic Lady (live)

If it wasn't for Black Sabbath, it was for Saint Vitus. If it wasn't for Saint Vitus, it was probably for death. These worshipers of early and doomy heavy music were one of the leading bands of the American traditional Doom metal, much prior to its late awakening at the beginning of the 90's as a contemplative slow growling-based metal. Saint Vitus were the original death alright, and they were slow, much tooooo slow to some people's ears, and to top it all, they were a seriously secret band. Thanks to the "Stoner" mini revival of heavy rock at the mid/late 90's, Saint Vitus are gaining more and more listeners that are following the yellow brick road of doom.

This live album was recorded at Germany's Circus Gammeldorf in 1989, released on vinyl in 1990, and last year by our lord the southern on CD. It contains Saint Vitus classics such as the crushing "Born Too Late", the addictive "Dying Inside" and the slowly galloping "War is Our Destiny", plus three tracks that weren't available on the original release: ""The War Starter," "Mystic Lady," and "Clear Windowpane". Along with the "Heavier than Thou" collection from 1991, here's a rare chance to catch 100% underground heavy music at it's best, as well as some freaky drum solos, whining Tony Iommi-like guitars and lazy as hell bass lines. Doom sure lives!

Pink Mountaintops - New Drug Queens

So. We have skulls, we have skeletons, we have a lot of pink flowers, a pinky name, and a scathing theme for the new single - "New Drug Queens". It doesn't get more Velvet Underground than this. Taken from the Pink Mountaintops new and second LP, "Axis of Evol", here are the new drug queens. They sound a bit electronic, a bit sludgy, a bit rough and very, very dirty. I wonder it they like playing with hedgehogs as well? Oh, god save the queens.

Hornblower stole my teddybear

It's been more than 10 years since overlooked director Nathanial Hornblower and video master Spike Jonze had both lost the "Best video award" at the '94 MTV VMAs. At the end of this month, Hornblower will be officially releasing his debut full-feature film named "Awesome! I Fuckin' Shot That!", and hopefully gain some lost respect from the media.

During the AIFST website-promos, Hornblower had decided to reveal his well hidden identity and show us all who he really is. While every Beastie Boys enthusiastic could have guessed the story behind that weird Swiss guy, it seems a lot of people were quite confused and still in the mist. Take Michael Stype, for example, who didn't realize what hit him when Hornblower rushed into the stage on that VMAs night, claiming he and Jonze should have won the award for directing "Sabotage" AND inventing a few Starwars plots.

You might fond Hornblower's general perception, as well as his Beastie Boys video classics such as "Watch'a Want", the DVD collection and even the Paul's Boutique album cover, but it's time to say tah-tah to mystery and face the truth. Adam "MCA" Yauch is hell of a visual specialist, and he has been paying a lot of dues, hiding behind his self-claimed "uncle" human hideout. So, he's now pulling the curtain off and finally revealing himself as the Hornblower that he is. Goodbye mystery, h-e-l-l-o Sundance film festival, h-e-l-l-o media, hello world!

Bricks are Heavy 1992

"When I get mad, yeah I get pissed, I grab a pen a write up a list, of all the ones who won't be missed..." L7 make my A+++ list, as one of the angriest RRRiot grl bands to ever hold a guitar. This power track is taken from the superb "Bricks are heavy" and also appears on the fitting "Natural Born Killers" soundtrack. A feminine rock classic.

(2) Nina Hagen - African Reggae
Nina Hagen Band 1980

The mother of punk, the ruler of shock, the queen of queens - and this rock/reggae tune is just a taste of her eclectic musical direction, Taken from her first album, Nina Hagen Band. Combining punk, rock, r&b, art-rock, opera and so much more, Nina Hagen still dominates the bizarre side of women in rock, and music in general.

(3) Grace Jones - Pull Up to the Bumper
Nightclubbing 1981

Grace Jones had made a huge impact back in the late 70's and early 80's with her funky disco vibes and twisted sexual image. She had the class, she had the groove, she had the moves - she had it all. This pounding dance floor track was featured on "A One Man Show" video filmed back in 1978, and also on her Nightclubbing LP.

(4) Aretha Franklin - A Rose is Still a Rose
Hits of Aretha Franklin vol. 1 2000

In times when the "Diva" title is being abused every 2 seconds, describing just about any teenage girl who gets paid enough money to "sing", it's always uplifting to recall the REAL divas. And one of them, if not the greatest, is Aretha Franklin, proving with this '00 piece she still has her powers. Backed by another tremendous female artist, Lauryn Hill (*) A Rose is Still a Rose was part of Franklin's Greatest Hits album entering the new millennium.

(5) Nico - Frozen Warnings
The Marble Index 1969

Velvet Underground's mysterious mistress, Nico, is one of rock world's most fascinating feminine figures. Supporting a sensual image, an unusual voice and a strong German accent, she had proved to be a terrific artist on her own rights. The classy Frozen Warnings is taken from her second LP, The Marble Index.

(6) Fiona Apple - Limp
When the Pawn... 1999

The angry Limp appears on Apple's second release, When the Pawn..., and draws a very harsh image of an angry young woman. The dark cynicism and intelligent word choices along with her rusty voice make Fiona Apple a special and highly artistic female figure in modern pop/rock music.

(7) Kate Bush - Babooshka
Never Forever 1980

A rather bitter- sweet story being told by a great female storyteller. Babooshka is a song dealing with love and betrayal as well as the time barrier, and was also escorted by an unforgettable video of Bush dressed like a dancer and an Amazon/female Viking.

(8) Dolly Parton - Coat of Many Colors
Coat of Many Colors 1971

Dolly Parton is a true force in contemporary Country music. Throughout her career she had her fair share of breast-publicity and low-budget movies, but she will always remain that sweet southern girl with a vivacious attitude and wit, showing on this beautifully humble song about childhood in poverty.

(9) Marcella Detroit - I Believe
Jewel 1994

Ex- Shakespear's Sister (*), Marcella Detroit's angelic voice and dark gothic image roared the charts back in '94, when her striking single I Believe became a hit. Now it's a 90's classic, much as Detroit's four studio albums.

(10) Jolie Holland - Old Fashioned Morphine
Escondida 2004

As an accomplished singer/songwriter, Jolie Holland puts her full comfort on the traditional American blues and folk music. Taken from her second release, Escondida, Old Fashioned Morphine is an odd praise song to the old drug that became best friend with the likes of William S. Burroughs and so many more.

On the cult movie "CB4" Chris Rock made fun of the rising Gangsta Rap scene, with his "Straight Outa Lowcash" imitation, referring to the militant aggression of acts like NWA. While nobody predicted the male-oriented sexist and criminal ways to actually gain control on the MTVs these days, this scene had a strong part in forging the commercialized rap music and attitude today, whether it's real or just a cheap publicity stunt.

Celebrity self-mockeries of any kind are always great and highly welcomed, since we all need a good shaking every now and then to prove us the real stars are way-way up in the sky. So, is actress Natalie Portman really into gangsta? Who's being mocked here? the star actress or the current rap stars? or, should I ask - does it really matter? Two nights after the twinkling Oscars, and one second after the newest 50 cent video, two commercial giants are meeting in one, single SNL satiric video. We got to have more of these, that's for sure.

Usually when I get to face topless nuns I think of the band Cradle of Filth. If I scrabble down my memory a bit, I can recall the NWOBHM band Witchfinder General, which had pictures of topless women/witches on their album covers. If I was a Black Metal fan I would have marked by now that I'm down with nuns and in a serious relationships with witches, but I'm not so I'll just have to claim that both female characters make great costumes for your casual Purim/Halloween/sexy party needs.

G-Spot Tornado is a name of a Zappa piece, but also the hopefully soon-to-be famous finger move that was adopted, or shall I say - INVENTED by a band of that same name. Their new debut album, "Hymns 4 Her" is currently on the verge of breaking out. And the nuns? they come built-in, I guess.

Sounding like an insane and colorful tornado of funk, rock, hip hop, metal riffs and Jazz-like improvisations, I find G-Spot Tornado to actually be the next Canadian Mr. Bungle, with a little naughty Primus twist. Shove those Saxophones, tweak these sick vocals, pound this bass-line, hip and hop a little bit and a terrific musical orgasm is just two fingers away.

Matisyaaa-man!

Matisyahu may sound and look a bit unusual at first, no doubt about that. Being the Hassidic Jew that he is, it's a strange experience to try and understand him from a first listen. But after two choruses of this Hasidic Reggae sensation, he can pretty much get you all hooked, if not by his music than by his words and extremely positive message. Even if you're not a fan of this type of religious hymns, you might as well find a comfortable shelter under the wings of his uplifting vibe. Frankly, It's not a weird thing after all, a religious Jewish guy turning into this kind of music, since the very core of Reggea is religious as well. Much like his Christian rock spiritual parallels P.O.D, who have joined forces with him on their latest album Testify, his message is pure, simple, even naive at times - but so very adorable and sweet. It's hard to say NO to Matisyahu.

His new and second album, Youth (not including the groovy Live @ Stubb's from last year) is set to be released at the beginning of March on JDub Records. The video for the first s/t single is just as much simple and plain, showing different characters and NYC roof-tops. Some say Matisyahu's music is childish, some might say the whole Hasidic Reggae thing is a bad joke and is being used as a marketing tool only. Personally I find these accusers to be totally superficial and negative, nasty even.

As for Matisyahu's part in the NYC traffic violation defense - well, I'm surprised to find out he's a really involved guy. Try reaching http://www.matisyahu.com , and you'll get the idea. So, have you already paid for your car insurance?

Written mostly in motel rooms all over the US, The Elected present us with their second release, Sun, Sun, Sun, out on Sub Pop. Straight from this album comes a great, great, great tune, tune, tune called "Not going home" - and lays a very cozy feeling of daydreaming slowcore in a pleasant mood. The Elected took my vote without even asking first, but I don't mind. They pretty much desreve it.

Herr K is a fabulous international anti-commercial art organization which supports the main goal of sharing : free music and art for all. Their musical offerings twist around the dark ambient/electronic genre, and so does "Histories (soundtracks to the works of Edgar Poe)", one of their unique albums that promotes the vision of MUSIC FOR THE PEOPLE. And that's exactly what the "Album flashlight" section of Honey Bucket is all about: introducing those who deserve and want to be shared to those who are eager to be shared with , hence - music lovers everywhere.

Histories is based on some of Edgar Allan Poe's works, and contains 9 electro/industrial tracks inspired by the great, dark writer. The full, complete album itself was released back in '04, but it was recorded in various places around the world for over than 6 years. Herr K state that their music is best experienced with headphones, and I tend to agree. You better feel as close as you can to their hypnotic offerings, in order for you to sense the true power of these sounds.

Ballad of the broken ballads

I tend to get a bit sensitive when it comes to Mark Lanegan. With him being one of my most favorite, most favored and total faint-causing artist to ever walk the earth, I find myself quite restless when he surrounds himself with females. I would rather see him working up close and personal with Mike Johnson again, for instance. Let's face it - I would rather see him gay (... and not the smiling type).

When he worked with P.J Harvey on his last LP Bubblegum, they had something really special going on. They both have a rough edge to their voices and style, and they've made a beautiful couple. Musically speaking.

Enter Isobell Campbell, ex-Belle and Sebastian and Gentle Waves. Isobell seems to represent the tender and sweet side of the music map, and has a history of cute indie-pop making. Personally, this type of music and style isn't exactly my cup of tea, but I thought it would be a nice idea to combine the deep throat of Lanegan and the candy one of Campbell. Well, I was wrong. "Ballad of the broken Seas" is a nice folk/delicate rock album, yet it lacks the power of a true collaboration. It doesn't sound like an album that supposed to be the fruit of two artist's work - since Campbell's presence is very, very pale and almost disappearing underneath Lanegan's voice, which may sound a bit tender at times, but not enough - NOT THAT HE NEEDS TO.

I don't find this collaboration a good idea at all. All I ever got from this album is an unpretentious Lanegan release, with some background singing and musical passages from a very delicate, TOO delicate presence-less female singer. I hope the next collaboration of Lanegan, if ever, will be with Fiona Apple. As for Campbell - I believe dough-boy to be a great option. "Hee-hee!"

Jada Pinkett Smith is pissed off. That's the only reasonable explanation for her fronting a metal band, Wicked Wisdom. The fact that her husband (Will Smith) keeps on making crappy movies and teeny-bop music probably adds some more stress. When I come to think of it, you can be in a metal band and still make teeny-bop music, can't you?

I tend to like Jada (Koren will be ber family-name as it appears on the official website). I loved her role in "Set if Off" back in '96. I also sympathize with her height issue, for I am kind of a midget myself. Being a bit taller than her, though, makes me even more eligible for forming my own pissed off metal band.

Wicked Wisdom play a catchy yet much aggressive metal-hybrid of funk, power chords and melodic vocals. Even though some might say the "NU-Metal" scene is going deaf-dumber-blind, the kids still dig it, and so do the record companies. Wicked Wisdom are claiming to deal with our rotten society and the wretched condition of human kind, which is OK (yet all chewed up), but what they really need to deal with is their lame name. I mean, "Wicked Wisdom" is so 80's!?

Other than the name barrier, my ears find them quite pleasent, in their little infantile way. Add Jada's name to the Kitty and Otep hall of modern aggressive feminine fronted fame, and you'll get a nice mix of the glass-breaking girlie teen anger that mothers are so affraid of.

Gregor Samsa woke up one morning, finding out he had turned himself from a troubled cockroach to a lovely and extremely sensual band.

Named after Franz Kafka's most famous bug-hero, Gregor Samsa is making music, as their website states. And what a beautiful music it is! slow, contemplative and delicate trippy-rock is Samsa's expertise, and judging by the 7+ minutes track "Young and old" from their upcoming album (out on March), the full "55:12" is going to serve another explosion of sensitivity and enchanting slowcore beauty.

Pardon me while I don't burst into tears, since Scott Stapp's arrest on his honeymoon makes me giggle with pure enjoyment. You see, it's not that I don't have any kind of respect towards the man - I do, actually. This man is a serious man of goals, and he does everything a human being can possibly do in order to reach and fulfill them.

His first project was to be an Eddie Vedder. Right, we already had a similar project is the past from another Scott (Weiland, that is), but he has been quite forgotten lately. Velvet Revolver a.k.a his"supergroup" is a terrific joke, and so is he.

Now, it seems that Stapp's second goal is to become a Layne Staley of sorts. He was arrested at the Los Angeles International Airport three days ago, after he was found too intoxicated to board the flight. My wise advice to Stapp is, be careful what you wish for. In other words, keep Eddie Veddering. At least he still got some skin on. Or does he?...

Grammy this, Grammy that. The more they add categories and awards, the more this whole event gets boring. I do believe that in a lot of US-oriented artists hearts there is a secret wish to win, or at least be nominated for a Grammy, much more hearts than we can possibly imagine. Not because anyone really cares, but because it's like a rubber stamp on their forehead, stating they have gone popular. Unlike my teen-days conception of the music world, some artists DO want more than 3 people on this planet to actually know them.

The winners list is endless and makes you fall asleep. The appearance of Sly and the Family Stone from the show is intimidating. U2 is the most archaic band on earth, shoving their wrinkled heads to any show that would invite them in. Kanya West needs to drop this megalomaniac image of his because it's extremely annoying. The Polka category is strange, as always. Fiona Apple didn't win anything. Some blond did. And so did Damian Marley, who isn't a blond (thank god!) but still won 2 prizes (best Reggae Album & Best Urban/Alternative live show), and that's all I ever wished from this sparkling piece of nothingness that is the Grammy.

It took quite some time for Bob Marley to get the worldwide recognition that he now owns and pretty much deserves, and it's a predictable shame most of it was only obtained after his death. I wonder if he was still with us, what would have become with the whole Reggae world? it seems that right now this scene is still seeking for a new and exciting prophet. I wouldn't be ashamed to say, though, that not only his life, but also his death gave a great boost to the popularization of Raggae music and the Rastafari culture.

Today is Marly's 61st birthday, celebrated by millions of fans around the world. Bob Marley wasn't the only and first Reggae artist to ever emerge, but he was the first - and right now, still is the last - to ever succeed in sending those Jamaican vibes to a great distance and become an international icon. Unfortunately, a lot of people still see him as an icon only, smiling from Tshirts and silkscreens, and prefer not to actually delve into his lyrics and deep cultural and social messages. But hey - that's the price you have to pay when your whole image becomes extremely popular.

It's not an easy task - combining both minimalistic electronics with a catchy atmospheric and melodic sound. It seems that Ezekiel Honig passed the test, though, since "More Human Than Human" is a worm and moving piece of sweet electric art. Don't get confused with the same-titled White Zombie song, because I'm not sure this guy has a thing with dead people. Not at all. Actually, Honig is your every-day-type-of-dude, and even though his sounds are all well programmed, computer based and quite experimental, he can surly make them comfortable and so very familiar.

After we all had a blast with the updated version of Sabotage (a reminder?), it's time to move on.... Are we facing the all-new version of MASH-UPS? we might.

This video was made out of cut&paste clips of an old animation movie called Pencil Mania. It was then mixed, traditionally following the spirit of Paul's Boutique, with our boys the beasties, to create a smashing video for Shake Your Rump. Although I really liked the original version (oh, those red leather-like pants), this one is a total darling.

I miss Zack De La Rocha. I really do. I miss him even more than missing Rage against the Machine. Well, actually, missing RATM will be missing Zack, and vice versa, I believe, since most (= not all) of the band's power was based on his strong essence and intransigent style.

While I was sleeping, or reading some newspapers and making paper dolls, Zack has recorded two solo songs since his departure with RATM. The first one, March Of Death, was mixed by DJ Shadow, and is a killer funky-hip hop track that makes you put it on an endless loop. The second, We Want it All, was featured on Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" soundtrack, and produced by Trent Reznor of NIN. The song sounds like your usual crazed rap/rock combo. It's not RATM, though, after all, Morello is not there. Moore also worked with RATM in the past, and fits well the general agenda of the anti-war protest.

Rumors, rumors, rumors... Zack stated a few years ago that he holds a full album ready to be published, yet we got nothing. Another rumor is that an album, also produced in full by Trent Reznor, is waiting on the line. I also heard that he had turned down a request by the almighty BAD BRAINS to become their lead singer, instead of HR. Out of pure respect to the last, I'm happy Zack is not going to be involved in this, if it was ever true.

Lately Zack has been doing some shows with a band called Son de Madera, and together they made an interesting mix of traditional Mexican folk music with his hip-hop delivering. I sure hope that some of these shows will make it to an official recording, because it sounds so fresh and unique.

My relationship with romantic ballads is based mainly on Nick Cave's The Good Son. With this sweetish album Cave made his way to my ear and heart with a fistfull of kitschy piano romance, yet still succeeded in keeping his well dark manners. When I first came across Antony & the Johnsons' Hope There's Someone, the whole general aura of The Good Son piano-craving had suddenly shined back to me, even though Antony is putting his main essence on being simply blue and broken, while Cave was used to find his comfort in some sick love imaginary. Besides their passion for expressive Scott Walker-like ballads, piano and the fact that they are quite outsiders, I wouldn't say Nick Cave and Antony have that much in common.

Antony is a very, very sad person, and being so sexually-confused had never been presented in such a bitter and doleful way. His second album with The Johnsons, I Am A Bird Now, is a fabulous and pure expression of confusion and lack of love or real compassion and understanding. It seems that Antony is the loneliest drama-queen on earth, and his search for fondness is nothing but a long, maybe endless, frustrating journey.

"Hope there's someone who take care of me when I die", a line from the first track on the album, is more or less the whole Antony and the Johnsons emotional agenda. Quite a way to kick start an album with, I might add, leaving no room for any kind of optimism or even a hint of a bliss. But, is Antony really alone? since he recruits a few diverse and colorful friends on this album as well. On You are my Sister, Boy George, Antonys' big idol is giving a helping hand, and Rufus Wainwright appears on the dark, rainy What Can I Do?. More help is given by the latest "freak-folk" craze, Devendra Banhart on the sweet/sour Spiraling, and Lou Reed, who had actually discovered the huge potential of Antony, is lending his guitar and poem-reading on Fistul of Love.

All in all, I Am a Bird Now is a wonderful and humble Blues/Soul oriented ballads album, with Antony's deep, torned and emotional voice. Actually, I seem to find his voice the one and only instrument that he will even need, since it contains all the dramatic sorrow and sadness a man can hold inside.

The videos for Hope There's Someone and You Are my Sister had made a great job in presenting the sexual confusion of Antony, and showed nothing but faces and characters that can't really be defined - man? woman? we can't tell, and judging from the album's artwork itself, presenting Andy Warhol's transvestite muse Candy Darling - it is one of Antony's biggest issues.

I Am a Bird Now had proved to be a beautiful and highly-personal work, and even though it contains contributions from other same-minded artists, the basic emotional wrack of Antony & the Johnsons is still the main attraction. The only even-better Antony moment I had this year was discovering his first effort, the self titled one, pulled out 5 years ago. I am sorry it took me so long, but very thankful for the exciting discovery.

2005 Out Through the In Door : Oh, great Satan!

Out of all the re-makes and recycled sing-along albums of the passing year, Ministry had the best goods to offer. Nothing too original, nothing really unused, same old songs, a few new meanings, some not-so-new rarities and oh-so-ugly artwork. The industrial-metal gods are still kicking it hard, or at least - trying to, due to the fact that Rantology has nothing fresh and too exciting to offer (nor any of their previous collections and anthologies). Riding along the popular anti George W. Bush wave, Al Jourgensen had the pleasure of taking some great Ministry classics and remix their way into hysteric Bush diss anthems.

The outcome is a one awesome album, but only because these were awesome songs from the first place, and Ministry is awesome in general. Here's your chance to enjoy Stigmata, Jesus Built My Hotrod, Bad Blood and N.W.O once more and with some more spices and different lighting, plus highly energetic live versions of Psalm 69 and Thieves. We also get a single new song, The Great Satan, which means that :

a. Jargouson had decided to become a Satanic worshiper;
b. George W. Bush is a great satan ;
c. George W. Bush had decided to become a Satanic worshiper.

Mmm... tuff choice. Anyway, Rantology is a hell of an industrial-metal madness, but I can't tell you I'm puting my full comfort in Ministry once more until they deliver some all-new material. In the meantime, watch out for the Revolting Cocks reunion this 2006, now I'll be damned!

2005 Out Through the In Door : Last Days? whatever...

Say what you want about Gus Van Sant's Last Days. Say it's a slow movie. Say it's a weird movie. Say it's even a boring movie. And you know what I say? I say it's not really a movie. No, it's not a movie - but more like a muse that bumped its head into a camera. I say it's Van Sant's pure memory translation of Kurt Cobain, all dazed and troubled. With nothing but a mumbling actor and a few unorganized scenes, we get a bright focus on, basically, nothing. Or do we?

Don't get fooled by the appealing statement on the DVD pack: "Rock-n-Roll will never die". It might sound like your usual sex-drugs-rock'n'roll movie schtick, but it's not. If you worship the rebellious Nirvana and adore Kurt Cobain for the noisy little rocker that he was, you'll be very disappointed. However, if you, like myself, think that the best Nirvana moments were the silent passages between the songs during their Unplugged, showing the troubled and confused face of one, lonely and disturbed person - you might actually enjoy watching Last Days.

Last Days is one from the heart, and shoots right to it. Van Sant was not concerned about building a story-line, and he didn't care much for lack of words on the film. Actually, Last Days is more like a glorious statue - static and extremely symbolic. Dealing with Blake - a goofy, stoned rock-star (Michael Pitt, who's also in The Dreamers and wears a true resemblance to Cobain) , we follow his last days at and around his old mention-house out in the woods, with a few exploiting friends, a worried mother (Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth) and nothing besides it. During these days he barely says one word, only mumbles to himself and running around the wood and house doing absolutely pointless things: eating, drinking, wearing a dress, playing with a shotgun... to name a few. We even get a little religious reference, when two young Christians are invited into the house and stating that in order to find a true reilef, one must sacrifice or be sacrified. At the end, Blake shoots himself in the head. Quite simple and much predictable, just like the angelic scene of his soul leaving his body at the bitter end.

Van Sant, once again, has done a beautiful work in translating the bitterness and emptiness of the Cobain legacy into one, simple film, and just like his work on the emotionally unstable "My Own Private Idaho" back in the early 90s, he has created a sad, visual document of a lost and miserable human being.

Do you remember when Weird Al Yancovic had his "Smells Like Nirvana" hit, and one of the main jokes was about Cobain's misunderstood words and meanings in the song? Well, one of the scenes in Last Days shows Blake sitting down, holding a guitar, barley playing it, and singing. He doesn't use full sentences and words, only syllables and half-pronunciations, yet this "song" he creates is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life, and the emotions that this broken young man is spreading around in this specific scene are countless.

If you want action and interesting tidbits, watch the documentary film Kurt and Courtney. If you want some food for the mind and memory, you got it on Last Days. So, is it really based on rotting nothingness? Yes, no, oh well, whatever. Nevermind.

2005 Out Through the In Door : Maximum Maximum

Kraftwerk are synonymous innovators. Their minimalistic, precise electro music has been ticking since the early 70's, when they were just young students fascinated with computers and electric sounds as well as classical music structures. Among with other German bands of the time (such as Can and Cluster), they created what is now being referred to as "Kraut Rock", which was, actually, the German all-sterile answer to the pompous and bragging progressive rock of their fellow British enthusiastic. It wasn't much of ROCK either, but well programmed sounds and clean, synthesized melodies.

When you come to think of it, the Germans were quite ahead of their time in other fields as well - take Punk, for instance. Nina Hagan was an original punk craze and was running things German-style much prior to the creation of Sex Pistols or even the birth of the "punk" and "rock" music combination. The language barrier, however, took it's toll and made it much difficult to break out internationally. But the language is not a big problem for Kraftwerk, since they are dealing with a lot of international topics anyway, and even if we might not understand some of the things they are saying, we get the basic point. And it doesn't get more basic than this - as robotics and computers are Kraftwerk's main attractions, plus some more mellowed topics too (Trans Europe Express, for example, or the marvelous Tour de France soundtrack).

The doubled DVD for Minimum, Maximum contains 20 tracks filmed in various locations, during Kraftwerk's '04 world tour. With your music being very well-programmed and computer based, it might be a bit difficult to have a true attraction on your show, since no real LIVE music is being played, nor a band and instruments. However, Kraftwerk are using this poor starting-point to pull out a whole conceptual experience, and the outcome is a perfect, even perfectionist performance of symmetrical visions and sounds, wrapping the whole atmosphere with their electric ambiance. It seems that just like Kraftwerk had managed to find perfect formula of clean and attractive sound combination, they are using the exact same formula to expand their whole vision and starch it even further in order to create a stunning presentation.

Without a doubt, the main attraction here are the huge video screens being used regulary during the shows, and bringing to life all the favorite classics. Autobahn, the best electronic masterpiece ever created (in my point of view, that is, and aside from Popcorn - yes, I'm serious!) is getting a vehicle treatment, showing long roads, international highway signs and fast cars. The Man Machine is all about deep red squares and words exhibition, while Radio Activity sets the mood for a serious Atom explosion. The long and winding road of Kraftwerk continues with the train-themed Trans Europe Express, and the MTV Europe Awards performance of Aero-Dynamic is another outstanding and simply electrifying work. The catching, addictive We Are The Robots pays respect to, well, their only role models probably - ROBOTS, which are being brought into the stage instead of their fellow humans. That leads me to my real and only concern when it comes to Kraftwerk : are they actually real? Personally, I think the guys are all made of Plastic and probably have no insides, but I might be wrong.

Now, add to all of these video presentations the square, precise stage appearance of the Kraftwerk men as four well organized, non-moving domino pieces, and you'll get a very logical experience, which saves a lot of room for imagination as well. If you like geometry you'll probably have the blast of your life, but if you're into southern American literature you might just as well find a good kick with this DVD, trust me on that one.

"The Proposition" is a new Australian movie based on a script written 100% by Nick Cave himself:

"Set in the 1880s, the film opens in the middle of a frenzied gunfight between the police and a gang of outlaws. Charlie Burns (Guy Pearce) and his brother Mikey are captured by Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone). Together with their psychopathic brother Arthur (Danny Huston), they are wanted for a brutal crime. Stanley makes Charlie a seemingly impossible proposition in an attempt to bring an end to the cycle of bloody violence..."

Oh come on, it has NICK CAVE all over it! after a helpful writing-hand and a tiny role on John Hillcoat's disturbing "Ghosts... of the Civil Dead" (= The Australian equivalentt to HBO's almighty OZ) back in '88, Cave returns to the movie scene, and this time - he's all alone with a pen and probably a deep paper cut, which gained him some well-earned respect from the London Film Festival as well. Yet another Cave event this 2005 - oh, happy day.

3 cd's of top-quality Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds works are B Sides and Rarities, the best collection any Cave fan could ever dream of, choosing from a variety of bootlegs and un-official albums. Yes, there was a wise editing job here, and the result is an impressive anthology that only compliments the wonderful musicianship of Cave and the guys.

It's not your usual "hit" collection, but a varied and colorful assortment of some unforgettable yet less-known songs. We get a mixture of cheeky Rock, royal acoustics, visionary Blues, earthly Folk and avant-garde Post-Punk, right aside those deep, tender and dark vocals of Nick Cave.

This collection is very much complete since it covers early official works from his first albums with the Bad Seeds, which came out in the mid-80's (such as the unripe The Moon in in the Gutter and The Six Strings That Drew Blood), superior covers (Leadbelly's Black Betty, for instance, one of the BEST covers by Cave and in general), glowing acoustic versions (most prominent are the classic, severe The Mercy Seat and bluesy City of Refuge), and a handful of excellent B-sides and other songs from various soundtracks and compilations (two hilights would be The Train Song and Blue Bird). All of these mouth-watering songs, plus a few from the "must" category (Where the Wild Roses Grow with Blixa Bergald taking Kilye's place, Nocturama) make one amazing assortment to any Cave collection, adding to the good-yet-predicted collection from '98, containing the more balanced choices of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds works.

If you tend to find the currnet Nick Cave a little bit anemic (despite his very good effort from last year, Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus), you better run, you better run, you better run to the city of refuge - and get yourself this powerful anthology right away. Not only this is a true monument of his previous creation with the Bad Seeds, but also a reminder of the fertile and talented musician that he was, still is and will always be.

2005 Out Through the In Door : Adulthood & Sisterhood

Two wonderful female artists had a glorious comeback this 2005, with impressive albums and a more mature approach, each one in her personal style, taking her own special path of music.

Six years have passed since princess Fiona Apple had dropped When the Pawn...(*), six years that were all filled with a pile of rumors about an upcoming new album. The basic story, which might be different from different sources, claims that Apple's record company, Epic, had actually censored the album and put it on hold since they were afraid the sales won't be that successful. Another version of the story was that Fiona herself decided not to let the first version of the recordings to be published, because she felt they were not good enough artistically. So, basically, we ended up having a bunch of camp-fire tales, and one loyal organization, "Free Fiona" who actually made some waves and had a very sacred goal of letting the archived recordings free.

Extraordinary Machine finally saw thy light of day in Septemer, and turned out to be a gorgeous, deep and surprising work. Fiona had much matured from her last (and amazing!) album, and this one marked a real progress with her communicating with the listeners and practicing some unforgettable tunes like no way before. She is only 28 but she has been in the music business in a long time, fighting demons and being quite angry and restless in a troubled Jazzy way. She might be as restless as back in her young days, but it seems Fiona Apple had a great time in turning all these energies of hers around and finding just the right formula of dark manner with a more sweetened approach. And it WORKS, just like an extraordinary machine.

Kate Bush was quite matured and settled right from the beginning, when she was only a teen and scoring a strong, unforgettable hit with Wuthering Heights. During her career, spanning about three decades, she was never a victim of music fashion and fading trends. Kate Bush has always been a musician of her own right and standards, mainly with her tremendous and dramatic yet childish vocal pop delivering. I tend to find Kate Bush not only a respected artist, but also a superb and impressive actress. Since her last album, The Red Shoes, 12 years have passed them by, finding Bush at 2005 as a full-time mother and still an enchanting woman. The doubled Aeriel came out in November, and was all spotted with little personal dots of her everyday life. King of the Mountain, Aeriel's first single, was a dumbfounding song and was presented with a colorful and sweet video gently inspired by Citizen Kane's Rosebud and a cute flying Elvis suit.

Kate Bush was never worried about her art being or not being popular by the charts, but made music from the heart that had the ability to enter other hearts as well. Aeriel is no different by any means than any of her other efforts - it's another Kate Bush work: unpretentious and honest like no other.

2005 Out Through the In Door : Trees & Oceans

Although not receiving the superstar status of their fellow Seattle rockers, the Screaming Trees have remained one of the most important and pioneering bands of the "Grunge" era, and, actually, much prior to it. Starting off in the early 80's and developing a 60's psychedelic and garage sound, along with dirty punk aesthetics and Mark Lanegan's growing-sour throat, the Trees have remained highly important contributors to the Seattle rock revolution of the 90's. Their influence was relevant back than (Nirvana, for example) and still is relevant, located in modern rock acts such as Queens of the Stone Age. 2005 marked the year of ceremonial honor, when it comes to the Trees : Ocean of Confusion is their second collection, reviewing their Epic years (1989-1996). The first collection, which came out in 1991, was filled with less mature and formulated material, a proper SST records release of sorts.

Well, it's not like the Screaming Trees had real hysteric hits, apart from Nearly Lost You which gained it's 15 minutes of fame back in '92, thanks to the Singles movie soundtrack. Nonetheless, this collection is highly precious to me, since it represents a formal, official public appreciation that well pays the respect this band deserves, and does it in a precise, efficient way. True, it's a little weird that All I know, which was a modest hit in '96 and a friendly tune is not on this collection, and I might have added to the list the beautiful cover for Jesse Youngblood's Darkness, Darkness plus John Lennon's Working Class Hero, but why be so petty - all the basic, original trademark Trees are here, and it's so damn great, makes a girl wanna cry.

Despite the somewhat militant image on his new 2005 album artwork and video for the striking single of the same name, Welcome to Jamrock, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley is all about continuing the Marley heritage with great passion, love and tender obligation. Damian is not a newcomer in the Reggae music scene - but he is a newcomer in letting a wider audience take a glance at the prime foundations of this Jamaican music and culture, combined with a new, more modern and eclectic musical combination - from Dancehall to Hip Hop and even R&B. Yes, it seems that young mr. Marley, out of a large circle of Marley siblings who have their own musical careers, holds a unique delivering style and such diverse attitude, developing the potential to become a true cultural force. I find Damian having both power and ability to bring the Reggae gospel straight to the masses, without losing its basic roots and social statement.

Is Reggae music really all about the Marley family? the answer is no, however - with Marley as your last name, and passion for music as your favorite game, you might find yourself a little bit closer to the spotlights and worldwide recognition. Already slowly building quite a cult-following in the US (and even wining a sweet Grammy Award back in 2002 for his previous album, Halfway Tree), Damian Marley still has a long road ahead of him. Yet with a smashing honest album like Jamrock flavored with his friendly, accesible cross-over vibe and sometimes harsh topics of struggled Jamaican everyday-life, he is here to stay for a long time in the name of Jah.

2005 Out Through the In Door : Return of the Drawn King

Not one, but two albums from the legendary Earth had surfaced this year : a freshly original new full length (Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method) and another stunning, hypnotic live one, recorded in 2002 (Living in the Gleam of an Unsheathed Sword). Underground king Dylan Carlson had the chance to, once more, broadcast his vision of doom ambient and noise-wall to the ears of those who have been missing it for a long, long time. I was so relieved to find out Carlson is doing well, and still working on giving life to this majestic vision of his. Right from the band's awakening at the beginning of the 90's, Earth has been a fantastic enigma - and still is, just like the musical direction of it's master (and only, at times) mind. It's so good to have him back.

Another Earth delight this year was the tribute album Legacy of Dissolution, containing 6 re-makes and mixes of Earth classics, reworked by Earth influenced artists such as Mogawi, Autechre and SunnO)). This little tribute represents a humble and truly beautiful act of respect and appreciation to the great musical legacy of Earth, still going strong and deeper into the depths of pure astonishing imagination.

Yes, it was quite a good year indeed.

With loads of past artists coming back to life, my biggest question for 2005 is : Did we have anything real new this year? it seems that the amount of re-emerging retros has taken over, for the better or worse. Sure, we had our fair share of stunning and fresh newcomers plus a massive leaning towards the new, elegant electro rock/pop trend, but my main personal impression and summary of 2005 will be - YEAR OF THE COMEBACKS. ABBA-inspired Madonna, 80's icons Depeche Mode and New Order, Pink Floyd reunion at the Live 8 (yet another recycled event) - just to mention a few, prominent ones. And not only did we have comebacks this year, since re-recordings were big also - full albums of remixes, covers, duets with the dead... Even the Internet had marked a special place in this whole re-make festival, as the Mash-Ups, which are actually partial-legal remixes of a few songs combined altogether, became a true online hit.

On the next few posts I will be sharing my personal favorite music, musical moments and interesting facts of 2005: favorite artists, events, albums and legally free mp3s.

Oh, yes. Quite a good year indeed.

Daddy, Can I Go Out And...

I am a big fan of online action games. I am a big, BIG fan of real silly, hit-and-run online games. Dad n' Me makes a fine example. Dad n' Me is a stupid and violent rampage of one purple and much disturbed teenager. Like father like son, this skull-masked creature is on a mission to destroy every other kid in the neighborhood - hit, toss, turn, bang, shake, throw... anything goes. I'm assuming the little boy has a few deep emotional problems, and seeing professional help would be highly recommended. While playing this retarded and very un-educational game today, an echo was ringing from deep inside my memory cells. Yes, then it hit me - literally - and I recalled of yet another troubled kid, who once wrote to his mommy a sweet poem:

"Singled out the kids who are mean to me
Get straight a's but they still make fun
I don't give a, I'll laugh last"

I believe that if anyone in the whole wide world would ever wear a skull mask and run around beating other kids up, they would must be THEM. No, I'm not talking about The Others. I'm not referring to Friday the 13th's Jason also, nor any other masked horror movie icon. It's all about THEM - all about the MISFITS. Because just like some of those silly online "action" games, the whole Misfits existence is all about silly offline rampage. The blood-tales, the vulgar violence, the skulls... Oh, sweet grotesque. Mommy, Can I Go Out And Kill Tonight? was, and still is, a superb energy song, with powerful deliverance and great terror lyrics. Along with their passion hymns for skulls, zombies and dead darlings, this Misfits statement is a must in every horror-lover music playlist.

Some day, some day (vocal goodness #2)

On the classic album "Floodland" (1988) Sisters of Mercy's mainman Andrew Eldritch had used a secret weapon for creating two of the most memorable goth-rock anthems ever made: the New York Choral Society. By combining the dramatic choir chants with Eltrictch's dark yet catchy melodies and haunting vocals, both Dominion/Mother Russia and This Corrosion had turned to be a milestone in dark pop/rock and two fine examples of magical compositions breaking down musical boundaries.

Featured in the videos for these songs was the one-album bass player - goddess Patricia Morrison, who well fitted the general direction of Eldritch's both visionary and musical needs. Dominion video was filmed at the Red Rock in Jordan, and supported a middle-eastern mysterious schik. This Corrosion was a darkened, wet and crowded tale of rain and black leather. Two beautiful songs and cult videos, from one great, legendary band.

Cheshire Chord Company (Vocal goodness #1)

Meet the Cheshire Chord Company. These fine British women can sing the a-capella AND handle the harmonies like, well, no other British women with some good musical direction. Their latest offering is a grandiose version of I Predict a Riot by the Kaiser Chiefs. Exploring the two versions from head to toes again & all over, I must admit that I tend to like the lady version a bit more than the original one.

The girls have a full album out, Hooked on a Feeling, containing vocal-only versions and alternative arrangements to various classics, such as the title itself, If They Could See Me Now and It's Raining Men (Haleluya!), to name a few.

The REAL men of Sabotage?

The video for Sabotage by the Beastie Boys is my favorite music video of all times. With the simplicity of art direction, amateur action scenes, retro-moustaches, pompous wigs and one huge sense of self-humor, director Spike Jonze and the Beasties have managed to create together a classic lo-fi masterpiece.

Up until this moment, that is...

"Who are the real men of Sabotage?", a question was once thrown into the open air (you better watch the Beastie Boys Anthology DVD for the complete Ciao L.A interview). Unfortunately, it's only a matter of time until these moments will become memories, since the legendary club is closing down at the end of 2006.

The new album by the amazing alt. metal band Mastodon will be called "Blood Mountain". Congrats, the band's first album with Warner Brothers (and third full-length album up to date) is expected to come out in the summer of 2006.
